Day 2 – Getty galleries

Cam went to school today and Max and I went to the Getty centre first. You park at the bottom of the hill and them get a driverless tram up the hill to the centre. We didn’t cover all the galleries but we did see Spring (Triumphal procession from Granny and Grandpa’s) which was nice.

We had lunch in the cafe, with a lovely shady spot under a loggia, and after lunch we picked up a couple of tickets for the Getty villa (you have to pre-book, which I didn’t know in advance so it was good we went to the centre first).

The villa is on a hillside in Malibu – not much in the way of views because of all the trees, but a nice calm setting. The herb garden smelled lovely. There was an exhibition of the Cyrus cylinder and of Tiberius, and I found a statue of Livia, which pleased me.

In the evening we picked Cam up and then fed her meatballs and spaghetti.

Santa Monica day 1

Today we went to the Santa Monica pier and watched them remove old pilings. 

Then wandered around the shopping area, visited Naughty Dog, sat in the gardens for a bit then went to Hurry Curry for lunch with a lot of Max’s coworkers. 
After we went to a supermarket then came back and chilled for a bit before picking up Cameron.
We went to her nursery and when she saw me she just shouted “Auntie Livy” and ran to me. I picked her up and we had a cuddle then she showed me her friends and her things. Then we drove to Chipotle for dinner (burrito) and then had a frozen yoghurt at Zingas. Then home, opened presents and then she had a bath and went to bed. 
I followed pretty fast because jet lag. 9:30pm or so (woke about 3:30am though, and can’t sleep).

When Support Is Just Plain Wrong

As someone that has worked in the support side of a technical field for almost 3o years I find that sometimes the advice that support people or pages put out is so wrong that it has to be documented.

So when my new Google Nexus 4 phone and my slightly older Nexus 7 tablet have an identical issue with one specific app I suspect there’s one of two issues at play.

– either the app doesn’t play nice with Nexus kit

– or the Nexus kit doesn’t play nice with the app.

Within those two options are a myriad of sub-options but they all boil down to that in reality. So I head off to the app support page – and the only clue you get as to the App itself is that they recently tweeted that “The xyzApp is about to hit #100million installs!” – anyway, a quick search in their knowledge base brings me to a page titled “xyzApp will not open”.

On it are 5 steps you can try – step 3 says to power off the device, leave it a few minutes and then try again. OK, this one I get and can understand but the next step leaves me speechless:

Power off the device and leave it off overnight.  Then retry.

What?

Yes, you read that right. Overnight.

Sorry people but powering off an otherwise normally functioning device overnight does not solve a software / hardware clash. I get the power cycle as it clears gunk out of RAM, etc and gives one a clean slate. I even get removing the battery for a few seconds to completely shut down the device and clear any residual trace of power that may somehow hang on to something that may just affect the normal working of an App.

But please … do tell me what powering off overnight achieves?

*Un*decorating – day 2

I spent the morning packing at Thorntree St, with Roy’s help (C is on a jet plane to LA…) and then went over mid-afternoon to see the progress. 2 more rooms were worked on today. The sitting room is now all stripped, just some dent-filling to be done and then a coat of undercoat. Ed and Cody then moved on to the master bedroom and luckily did not have the same problem with the ceiling covering as before and got it pretty much all cleared and some cracks filled, and when I arrived Ed had started on the third (pink wall) bedroom and had done about half.

Tomorrow they will attempt to get a couple of the rooms undercoated, and maybe the third on Thursday morning. So when we start moving stuff in on Thurs pm, there will be a couple of rooms to fill with stuff while they work on whatever they can with the mayhem ensuing.

On the way home I picked up tester pots for Mizzle, Calluna, Brassica (perhaps I can sneak it by Andrew by changing the name…) and Cord. It’s a difficult job this paint-choosing, particularly where someone else gets a say too :D
